Amaris and Fox could not stay away from Arizona long following a great summer road trip in July. Fox' dad, Leroy, is an avid hunter who hunts quail, javelina, and dear most seasons throughout Arizona. This year, the duo would be accompanying him and a few friends to the Barry M. Goldwater Range for opening weekend of quail. Prior to leaving civilization some long over due luxury R&R was booked at the historic Hacienda Del Sol Guest Rach Resort. The Forbes 4-star hotel is a gem in the Sonoran Desert that is enjoyed by locals and travelers alike. Upon entering the tranquil courtyard the staff was waiting with cold champagne followed by a walk through the restaurant out to a winding path by the pool that ended at a "special room" according to the guide. This room was special as the back patio boasted an outdoor shower that was absolutely heavenly.

The following morning began with with a delicious breakfast on the patio in the shade of the cool and dry morning. Following breakfast and a pleasurable shower the resort was enjoyed until the early afternoon when it was time to rendezvous at the homestead, prepare for the drive towards Phoenix that would ultimately head west to Ajo (Pop. 2,841) before cutting south onto dirt roads and washes. A stop was made on the outer edges of civilization to meet up with two good friends who happen to be of the rare Basque lineage. The five hunters loaded into two trucks and set out for the nearly two hour trek to camp. After a late arrival camp was setup at and the weary crew settled in before an early morning.

Sunrise came quickly, before anyone else was out of a tent Leroy, who slept in the 4Runner, was healed up and walking around in search of groggy targets. A few shots rang out with no bounty, which would be one of only a few times that happened the rest of the trip. Heavy rains in the area throughout the Winter of 2019 led to a productive time for the Quail and there was an abundance of wildlife this season. During the course of the day the hunters drove to a sports where the birds were likely to be plentiful. At the first watering hole Leroy abruptly stopped the truck, jumped out, and began blasting a ridge 15-20 yards away. Five birds were recovered, this was the start of his incredible run for the weekend with over twenty birds bagged. At the end of the day everyone was sun kissed, well hydrated, and more than ready for some steaks.

Day two on the range was an equally as successful hunt with everyone bagging at least one quail. Amaris was able to get her first bird and Fox spent the weekend shooting with his Great Grandfather's Winchester Model 1912. That century old gun still aims true at range and was a true joy to shoot for the weekend. The real treat came Saturday night when thinly sliced quail was sautéed with a bit of butter, onions, and peppers. The quail practically melted away in mouths as the party devoured quite a few of the desert creatures and the night dragged onward. While this was a quick trip the plans have already been made to return for opening weekend of the 2021 season and a longer stay in the old pueblo.

Until next time...
