All Smiles at the Sunset Hill Shooting Range

Deep in the hills of the Pocono Mountains is the Sunset Hill Shooting Range located in Henryville, PA near Paradise Valley in the shadow of Mount Pocono. The ride is an enjoyable two to two and a half hours west of Manhattan or the Hudson River Valley villages. Our route took us along 84 west through the mountains before arriving at the range with sleet coming down and a 38 degree chill to greet us as machine gun fire echoed through the forest.

Pistol Practice at Sunset Hill Shooting Range
Amaris with a tight pattern from twenty yards

After checking in, be sure to sign the waiver beforehand to save time, we were given a brief safety briefing and were heading outside to meet an instructor assigned to our group. Amaris' friends had already been there for an hour, were cold and damp, so they decided to head to the nearby Airbnb after we both fired off a few rounds with an Uzi. Amaris bested Fox by hitting a target with four out of seven shots compared to his three out of seven.

After firing at stationary targets with the Uzi Fox wanted to try his hand at trap shooting where he hit 4/5 targets on his first try and not quite as well on the next round. Amaris gave the Mossberg 5000 the old college try and clipped a few of the clays.

Next on the list was target practice with pistols where Amaris excelled from twenty yards with a 9mm Sig Sauer. With the assistance of a red dot optic her shot grouping was tight and on target. Fox chose a 45mm and did reasonable from thirty yards with a few shots staying tight low and left of bullseye with a couple inching closer. Alex, the instructor, informed us that squeezing a trigger with the lower portion of one's finger, rather than the tip on the uppermost pad, will often times lead to the trajectory lowering to the left (right right handed users).

Last on the list would be the AR-31 bolt action rifle with a bipod that Fox would be firing. The power rifle had little to no recoil, reloaded smooth as butter, and was incredibly accurate with the adjustable zoom optic. While we could have stayed for much longer and continued shooting the various guns we decided to call it quits after a solid hour of fun shooting.
