Wisconsin | Granite Peak and Wausau

Following the fun trip to Breckenridge, CO Amaris and Fox decided they wanted to get the kiddos on the slopes before the season passed. After a bit of research for the best hills close to Chicago the gang decided on Granite Peak, which is near Wausau and roughly four hours and twenty minutes from downtown Chicago. The distance made for an easy getaway and allowed us to get far enough away from home to experience something new. Overall, everyone enjoyed the mountain and there was a good mix of lines to keep the beginner children and adults happy.

The gang arrived to the Jefferson Street Inn after dark and after checking into the room immediately went downstairs to enjoy dinner in the restaurant. To our surprise there was a guitar player jamming away and adding life to the room. This was a pleasant change to the quiet lobby and we thoroughly enjoyed the show before turning in for the night. The next morning began with a quick breakfast on the way to the mountain where we arrived extra early to get gear rented. The staff was helpful and we quickly got everyone the necessary gear.

The suggestion we would make to others taking young children onto the mountain for their first time is to sign them up for classes. Either for the full day or for half it is helpful to have someone who knows how to explain "physics" to them in a way that makes sense. While Amaris and the kiddos crushed the kiddy slope Fox hit the far side of the mountain with a run that had several jumps in a row that closes with a large bank turn. The runs were short and lines quick with a solid pace that everyone was psyched on. Saturday was closed out with happy hour in the food hall with the delicious local beers of Wisconsin.

With a winter trip to Wisconsin in the rear view mirror both of us were ready for another adventure to the state during the warmer months. This dream was realized in May when the two of us returned for a night in Baraboo at the eclectic Ringling House. and an incredible day hiking around Devil's Lake.
