The next stop on the Summer 2021 road trip following a couple days in South Dakota was Sheridan, WY for both Amaris' and little Fox's birthday where we were able to catch our breath in the mountains. Everyone enjoyed the ride through Wyoming as we gained in elevation and lush green ranches spotted the country side. Sheridan is the "Cowboy State's Coolest Small town" and it is highly recommend for anyone as a destination due to a lively Main Street and proximity to the Bighorn National Forest. During the two days in the region we enjoyed the stunning views of the mountains from a relaxing Airbnb perched atop a hill, strolled through Main Street, went on a once in a lifetime horseback ride through Bighorn National Forest, and sampled local steaks. Cheers to a wonderful time in Sheridan, a place Amaris and Fox will certainly return to.
A sunset walk and a babbling brook in Sheridan, Wyoming
After unloading at the house near Main Street, and relaxing a little bit, we took a stroll into town after 9pm when most the restaurants had closed for Wednesday night. The lone option for Amaris' Birthday dinner was Just LeDoux Saloon & Steakout where we enjoyed a tasty meal and well crafted cocktails from a friendly staff. Morning greeted us with sounds of the mountain birds, an invasion of moths, and calls with Fox' favorite colleagues. The nearby Bighorn National Forest that we would be exploring offers a variety of options for outdoor fun with camping, Bighorn Climbers' Coalition, Hiking Project, Fishing and Hunting, and horseback riding.
The children and their father were scooped from the local Holiday Inn as we all headed towards horseback riding with Buffalo Mountain Outfitters (Call Bob at 307-217-2539) in Story, WY. What came next was growth for the entire clan with a few heart stopping moments as the horses waded through raging waters and re-forged steep trails early in the season. Most of us are novice riders and the adrenaline filled trek before reaching a beautiful meadow was well worth the price of $250 per rider for a half day of unforgettable adventure. Once again, a modern family climbed to new heights on a path less traveled with well bred companions of the four legged variety.
Bob and his team come highly recommended for anyone looking to ride and hunt in the Bighorn!
The family was mentally and physically exhausted following the adventurous half day of horse riding and we quickly made the way to Market Hall, which was previously a train station that has kept it's historical charm, for a variety of bites and local drinks. The station is across the street from the well known Sheridan Inn and associated restaurant / bar founded in 1893 where Buffalo Bill lodged his traveling show during the late 1890s. We have been fascinated by the legacy of the territories across America since visiting the sacred land and are hungry to learn more about the area's history.
During the mid-afternoon heat Amaris and Fox strolled back to Main Street while the Third Thursday Street Festival was going on with lots of tents and live music.
A pit stop was made for fried pickles and locally brewed flights at the Smith Alley Brew Co. The brewer's recommendations were refreshing and the celebratory atmosphere made for a relaxing afternoon in the sun before meeting up for little Fox's birthday dinner. The gang settle on Wyoming Rib and Chophouse for some locally sourced, grass fed, steaks.
The time spent in Sheridan was incredible and like most stops on the trip we all wished we had just a little bit more time in the shadow of the Bighorn National Forest prior to heading north. Friday morning we were up early to pack the car, speak with colleagues, and begin the 8+ hour drive to Babb, MT on the East side of Glacier National Park. The drive would take us through Billings, Great Falls, Browning, which is the headquarters of the Blackfeet Indian Reservation, and all the gorgeous landscape in-between.
